    Rent Increase Guideline

The maximum annual rent increase allowed for rent-controlled units.

The rent-increase guideline is the maximum percentage a landlord can raise rent in a year on a rent-controlled unit, set annually by the province. Where it applies, an increase can usually happen only once every 12 months and requires proper written notice (90 days in Ontario). Not every unit is covered: Ontario, for example, exempts units first occupied for residential purposes after November 15, 2018 from the guideline cap, though the timing rules still apply.
