GlossaryTenancy & Leases

    Standard Lease

    Residential Tenancy Agreement (Form 2229E)

The government lease form most private Ontario tenancies must use.

In Ontario, most private residential tenancies signed on or after April 30, 2018 must use the government's Standard Lease (Form 2229E). It sets out the rent, deposit, services, and rules in a consistent format, and any added term that removes a right the law gives a tenant is void even if signed. If a landlord does not provide it, a tenant can request it in writing; the landlord has 21 days, and a tenant can withhold one month's rent if it still is not provided.
