Real Estate Commission
The negotiable fee, usually paid by the seller and split between agents.
Real estate commission is the fee for selling a home. It is negotiable (no law sets the rate), usually paid by the seller out of the sale proceeds, and typically split between the listing brokerage and the buyer's brokerage. Totals vary by region and brokerage, commonly around 3.5% to 5%, and GST/HST is added on top. A buyer usually does not pay extra, but a buyer representation agreement sets out what the buyer owes, and the buyer can be responsible for any shortfall the seller's contribution does not cover.
